Empowering Hope: Romania and Ukraine – Bridges of Solidarity for the Health and Inclusion of Refugee Women

Press release: CONAF launches programs to support the integration and empowerment of Ukrainian refugee women in Romania.

Romania faces a reality that requires immediate action: the highest incidence of cervical cancer in the European Union. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer. Nevertheless, Romania continues to record the highest incidence and mortality rates from cervical cancer in the EU, disproportionately affecting women of working age. Over 1,793 deaths and 3,368 new cases were reported in 2022 in our country, and estimates show a steady increase in the coming years. Each new case represents a personal tragedy and an economic burden for society: productivity losses of over EUR 46 million annually reflect the impact of insufficient prevention and treatment management. While thousands of women are fighting this disease, the war in Ukraine adds a new dimension to suffering. In this context, the National Confederation for Women’s Entrepreneurship (CONAF) launches Empowering Hope, a visionary initiative that redefines solidarity between the two nations.

Solidarity that Changes Destinies

Throughout history, Romania and Ukraine have shared borders as well as values. Empowering Hope strengthens this relationship through an initiative that transcends cultural and economic barriers, placing humanitarian support, health commitment, inclusion, and social equity at the forefront. Today, this bond takes on a new dimension—support for women bearing the burden of war and vulnerability. Empowering Hope will become a bridge between a present marked by suffering and a sustainable future for more than 300 refugee women.

An Integrated Solution for a Common Problem

Empowering Hope aims to address the shared challenges of Romania and Ukraine through an integrated and innovative program that includes:

  • Medical prevention and education: Access to HPV vaccination and information sessions.

  • Psychological counseling: Healing war trauma through emotional support.

  • Economic integration: Vocational training and career development support.

Hope Begins in Chernivtsi

The first chapter of the project will be written on November 29, 2024, in Chernivtsi, where CONAF members, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Romania, will donate food, toys, clothing, footwear, books, and bring smiles to the faces of 200 Romanian children who have been living for more than 1,000 days under the shadow of war. These children, separated from their fathers on the frontlines, continue to learn, dream, and preserve their cultural roots. This symbolic action is more than an expression of solidarity—it is the beginning of a story of transformation and hope.

Ambitious Goals, Real Impact

Empowering Hope creates a sustainable model of inclusion and prevention through:

  • Economic opportunities: Romanian language courses, digital training, and mentorship.

  • Prevention and health: Health education sessions and access to vaccination.

  • Continuous education: Workshops and conferences to bring expertise closer to local communities.

  • Psychological support: Mindfulness and stress management workshops.

The project will be implemented in six counties—Bucharest, Tulcea, Constanța, Iași, Suceava, and Brașov—offering refugee women access to essential resources for a better life.

Empowering Hope is proof that solidarity can transcend barriers and transform lives. It is a commitment to a healthier, fairer, and more united world. It shows that prevention is not only a medical strategy but also an investment in the future. Together with CONAF, Romania reaffirms its place at the heart of European values, demonstrating that when we build together, no obstacle is insurmountable.
